What is a Brazilian Butt Lift?
Brazilian butt lift or BBL is the fat grafting to the buttocks to increase the volume and produce a lift of the sagging buttocks for a better shape and fullness. Hence the term “lift.” In BBL, the fat from one part of the body is extracted and injected into the buttocks. Common donor areas are the abdomen, flanks, and thighs.
The fat harvested is processed and purified to prepare it for injection. Usually, the surgeon removes more fat than is required so that enough fat is available after preparation. Skin excision is a must before the BBL when sagging skin is present.

Brazilian Butt Lift Process
A BBL procedure involves the following steps:
This procedure is done using anesthesia. However, when the amount of fat transfer is low, we use local anesthesia.
The surgeons perform liposuction of the donor areas, usually the abdomen, lower back, or thighs.
The fat is harvested and decanted to remove the fluid component and prepare it for injection.
The surgeon injects the harvested fat into different buttock areas to add volume and give a rounded and fuller appearance. The injections are done using a “multiple droplet” technique in multiple layers to ensure the survival of the fat.
All incisions are closed using sutures. The surgeon applies compression garments to the treated area.
Previously the fat injections were done in all layers, including within the muscle and subcutaneous planes. But, in recent years, with extensive studies and the increased incidences of deaths due to fat embolism in the west, guidelines for fat grafting have changed to allow only subcutaneous injection of the fat.
Also, on injecting too much fat in one go, it is found that the fat dissects into tissue planes, and the rate of complications increases. Hence, the revised guidelines state to do it in subcutaneous planes and multiple sittings rather than larger volumes in one shot.
