What is a Buttock Augmentation Surgery?
Buttock or gluteal augmentation is a cosmetic surgery to improve the buttocks’ shape and size for an attractive contour.
Sudden weight loss, improper development of the buttocks, or aging may give a flat appearance to the gluteal area. Some medications can even lead to a loss of fat in the gluteal region.

Buttock Augmentation with Implant Process
Implants find use to enhance the contour when there isn’t enough fat available, or there is a need for more augmentation in specific areas. You can place an implant in the subcutaneous/subfascial pocket or the submuscular/intramuscular pocket.
Anesthesia IV sedation and/or regional or general anesthesia is used for this procedure.
The buttock augmentation approach is from the midline with the patient in a prone position. The surgeons create a plane between the gluteal folds on either side. The implant can go into the pocket subcutaneously under the skin and fat but above the muscle. Alternatively, we can place it intramuscularly under the muscle fibers.
A subcutaneous implant can be inserted if the patient has enough subcutaneous fat. However, if the subcutaneous fat is less, an intramuscular placement is better so that the implant does not show. But the intra or submuscular implant is usually smaller and gives better upper pole fullness, i.e., a “Bubble butt.”
Similarly, a submuscular placement would give good results if a patient is lean and thin and has a good lower pole fullness but a flat upper pole. But, if the patient is well built and needs a more generalized or middle and lateral fullness, then a subfascial pocket is better.
Both sides are examined for symmetry and closed with sutures. Bandages are applied for compression to help reduce swelling and discomfort.
Brazilian Butt Lift Surgery Process
The Brazilian butt lift is an autologous fat transfer procedure to the buttocks. The fat is harvested from the lower back or abdomen, filtered, concentrated, and injected back into the buttocks using a closed system. The advantage of AFT is that we are using our own fat.
A second and more important advantage is that fat can be injected into the areas where the augmentation is needed, whereas an implant must be placed in specific pockets.
